Tactile indicators are one of the few finishes on a project where the code is explicit and the consequence of getting the layout wrong is immediate: a visually impaired user relies on that surface underfoot to know a stair, a platform edge, or a change of direction is coming. Malaysia’s accessibility requirements under MS 1184 and the OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) accessibility provisions set out where warning and directional tactile studs are required and how they are laid out, and this is one of the few items on a drawing where “close enough” is a genuine safety and compliance gap, not just a design nicety.

Layout is where most tactile specifications go wrong
More often than the product itself. Warning studs need a minimum depth and correct offset from the hazard edge; directional studs need a consistent orientation that actually leads somewhere useful. We will review your tactile layout against MS 1184 before it is installed and flag any run that will not read correctly for a visually impaired user, which is the check that protects you at CCC and at accessibility audit.
Material and installation matter as much as layout. A tactile stud that is correctly placed but poorly fixed becomes a maintenance and compliance problem within a year: adhesive-only or polymer studs lift, wear smooth, or discolour under continuous foot and cleaning-chemical exposure, at which point the tactile function itself has failed even though the layout drawing still looks compliant. Stainless steel studs, correctly recessed or bonded, hold their profile through the wear cycle a public building actually sees, which is the difference between a detail that passes inspection once and one that stays compliant for the life of the building.
